Pilar Bayer, full academician of the Royal European Academy of Doctors-Barcelona 1914 (RAED), has given the conference “Las matemáticas de la música digital” (Mathematics of digital music) in the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Cantabria within the cycle “Matemáticas en acción 2017-2018” (Mathematics in action 2017-2018), aimed at school students and secondary school teachers.
For the academician, “the understanding of the nature of sound is a subject that has been addressed since the dawn of civilization and that has led to the creation (direct) or the application (indirect) of mathematical concepts of different nature. In the workshop an introduction was made to the most relevant mathematical techniques present today in the digital treatment of music, which intervene from its composition and interpretation to its reproduction and storage”.
The objectives of this cycle are to disseminate the essential role played by mathematics in very varied fields of scientific and technical knowledge, to show the application of mathematics to real problems and to teach how to construct mathematical models for their study, to complete the vision of mathematics offered in regulated education with an interdisciplinary vision and serve as a meeting point for people from different fields who use mathematics as a basis or fundamental tool in their work or study.
