Joan Sabater, special full academician of the Royal European Academy of Doctors-Barcelona 1914 (RAED), said yesterday the principles of the so-called predictive medicine, based on genomics, in the academic session “Medicamentos, genes y efecto terapéutico” (drugs, genes and therapeutic effect), organized by the section of Health Sciences of the RAED.
“Every person has a different DNA, which explains why sometimes medication doesn’t have the expected effect or why do an adverse effect -he explained-. Predictive medicine studies the effects that drugs will in each person according to their genes. Today you can already know the risk of a disease before symptoms appear and thus initiate a personalized preventive measures”.
