Daniel Turbón, full academician of the Royal Academy Europe of Doctors-Barcelona 1914 (RAED) and professor of Physical Anthropology at the University of Barcelona (UB), has been appointed professor emeritus of the area of Knowledge of Physical Anthropology of the Department of Evolutionary Biology, Ecology and Environmental Sciences of the same university. The appointment as professor emeritus applies to retired teachers after a rigorous selection of candidates. At the opening ceremony of the 2017-2018 academic year, Turbón received the UB medal on the occasion of his retirement after 43 years of uninterrupted service at the institution.
Daniel Turbón has taught since 1984 the subject Human Evolution, among other subjects. He has been a visiting professor at various universities and congresses, national and international. He is currently coordinator of the Teaching Innovation Group of Biology and Culture of the University of Barcelona. As a researcher he has led 16 projects, seven of them in molecular biology. He is currently investigating the origin of human growth and development. He has published 241 scientific papers and is the author, among others, of reference books such as “La evolución humana” (Human evolution) (Ariel, 2006) and “Darwin y el mono” (Darwin and the monkey) (Sello Editorial, 2009).
He has been a member of the Permanent Council of the International Association for the Study of Human Paleontology of Unesco representing Spain and secretary of the Spanish Society of Physical Anthropology. He is also part of the Latin American Association of Biological Anthropology and the European Anthropological Association, among other scientific societies. He has chaired the organizing committee of prestigious international meetings and has been director of the blogs “Origin and evolution of life” and “Origin and evolution of man” of the journal Investigación y Ciencia.
