Ferran Guedea presents his latest studies in the Center for Contemporary Culture of Barcelona
Ferran Guedea, professor of Radiology and Physical Medicine at the University of Barcelona, director of Radiation Oncology at the Catalan Institute of Oncology and full academician of the Royal European Academy of Doctors-Barcelona 1914 (RAED), participated on June 25 in a event organized by the Center for Contemporary Culture of Barcelona (CCCB), the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (Idibell) and the Molecular Mechanisms and Experimental Therapy in Oncology Program with the conference “Tecnologia quàntica i càncer. Investigació i aplicació en la seva detecció i tractament” (Quantum technology and cancer. Research and application in its detection and treatment). During the session, held in the CCCB headquarters, the researcher from the Spanish Higher Scientific Research Center Laura Lechuga and the researcher of Idibell and also of the University of Barcelona Víctor Moreno also participated.
The activity was part of the cycle “Quàntica, Estació Beta. La quàntica explicada per experts” (Quantum, Beta Station. Quantum explained by experts), organized by the Center for Contemporary Culture. The session presented the most innovative aspects of this research and the advances that quantum technology can bring with the implementation of lasers, sensors and radiotherapy. From the traditional application of radiotherapy solutions to early detection thanks to nanophotonic sensors, research at the frontiers of quantum technology and its future applications is a live and leading field in the improvement of the detection and treatment of cancer.
Before the conference, the participants made a special guided tour of the exhibition “Quàntica” (Quantum), of the CCCB, which counted with the participation of various collaborators of the Salvem Vivas 2019 (Save Lives 2019) campaign, which raises funds for research in the fight against cancer. The director of this exhibition is José Ignacio de la Torre, professor of Physics at the University of Barcelona. Guedea maintains an intense activity that, beyond his medical and teaching responsibilities, leads him to work intensely in the dissemination of the latest advances in oncological treatments and in the promotion of campaigns in favor of research.
