Francisco Javier Garrido, recognized expert in management and business strategy and corresponding academician to Chile of the Royal European Academy of Doctors-Barcelona 1914 (RAED), has presented the work “Hacia el límite ético de la estrategia” (Towards the ethical limit of strategy), in which he approaches the ethical character that business management should have as one of the main drivers of today’s society. For the academician, this consideration transcends the current epoch and even Western thought to settle on the ethical bases of all human civilizations, which he reviews in detail in his study.
“If we consider the importance of a healthy ‘ethical musculature’ in organizations as the basis for an appropriate development of serious solutions and at the level that the exercise of human and organizational life (public and private) throughout the planet, we would welcome the words of Downs (1975), for whom integrity is an essential phenomenon of good relations, since deception disfigures the essential coherence between achievements and statements. Hence the numerous local deceptions and frauds of global impact in America and Europe in recent years have led many authors and thinkers to conceptualize multinational companies as ‘sick’ entities”, reasons Garrido.
From there, the academician questioned how it’s possible that serious financial errors, miscalled accounting creativity, have lasted for years in such large companies and endorsed by major accounting auditing firms or how a single broker originated a loss of 4,900 million of euros to the French bank Société Générale in January 2008. “From all this it follows that unethical behavior manifests in managers through personal tyranny, the dishonest relationship with employees, the unfair balance between personal priorities and those of the common good, “he replies to himself.
To end this unethical management, Garrido refers to the training programs of the main business schools in the world that take into account this responsibility of the manager. “The complexity of the combination between ethics and strategy supposes a complexity that isn’t such, since discarded this only limitation for the design, formulation or strategic exercise, we have all the other possibilities available and at hand in the world of creativity and innovation of the 21st century”, he concludes.
