Núria Vallcorba, dotor in Dentistry and former president of the Catalan Society of Dentistry and the Spanish Society of Periodontics and Osseointegration, advocates a comprehensive vision of oral health and general health, given the links between many gum diseases and others very diverse.

“Today we know that certain general diseases are related to gum diseases. Cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and premature births, for example, and there is also a relationship with cancer. Gums, as they are inflammatory, can act throughout the body and take it into account when we are in front of the patient”.

Vallcorba made these considerations during his admission as full academician of the Royal European Academy of Doctors-Barcelona 1914 (RAED), in a ceremony that was held in Barcelona on April 4 with an audience of 250 people, including three university rectors.

The recipient read the admission speech “Salud periodontal y salud general: la alianza necesaria” (Periodontal health and general health: the necessary alliance). On behalf of the RAED answered the full academician Jaime Rodrigo de Larrucea, president of the Section of Technological Sciences.
