José Regidor, professor of Cell Biology and rector of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, believes that the secret of longevity and quality of life goes beyond healthy habits by the continuous activation of the brain. Regidor participated in the Third International Act of the Royal European Academy of Doctors-Barcelona 1914 (RAED), which was held between 15 and 22 July in various Baltic cities, with the presentation “Esperanza de vida, longevidad y función cerebral” (Life expectancy, longevity and brain function).
“If we stop working with the brain, we will lose brain power, we are what we were, we are the result of what we have lived and how we have lived”. Regidor explained how current biology sets the limits of longevity over 120 years and said that there is a lack of studies on advanced brains, since studies focus on pathologies. “When we study healthy brains in search of their old age we may find out many of their secrets”, he said.
