Mr. Dr. Segundo Píriz, PhD in Veterinary Medicine and Rector of UNIE University, enters as a Numerary Member of the Royal European Academy of Doctors, with the speech “La universidad en la segunda década del siglo XXI: entre la crisis y la globalización” (The university in the second decade of the 21st century: between the crisis and globalization).

The university in the second decade of the 21st century: between the crisis and globalization

“We are aware that our primary mission, teaching, primarily shapes our identity. The transmission of knowledge was the main and almost sole task of Higher Education Institutions for centuries. It is true that in the past only an elite had access to university and that attending classes often guaranteed privileges and helped reinforce a social structure that remained stable from generation to generation. The adoption in our country of the Anglo-Saxon model, with 40% of young people between eighteen and their early twenties in university, allowed sectors of the population who traditionally did not have access to higher education to enter it. This fact transformed Spanish universities from the second half of the 20th century to the present day and became one of the main elements of social justice.”

“The main wealth of a country is the education of its citizens. To achieve this goal, we need excellent and high-quality education based on good theoretical content, practical training that allows the development of that content, increasing the importance of teaching and learning in other modern languages, the use of information technologies, and the cultivation of social skills and teamwork. We must raise society’s awareness of this reality and of the key role that education plays in the individual and collective development of any country.”
