Academician Isidro Fainé assumes the presidency of the World Savings and Retail Banking Institute
Isidro Fainé, president of the Spanish Confederation of Savings Banks and the La Caixa Banking Foundation and full academician of the Royal European Academy of Doctors-Barcelona 1914 (RAED), has assumed the presidency of the World Savings and Retail Banking Institute (WSBI) after being unanimously elected last November during an assembly that this organization held in New Delhi. Born in 1924, the WSBI brings together some 7,000 savings banks and retail banks around the world that capitalize 15 billion euros, and has 1,300 million customers in more than 80 countries, mainly families and SMEs.
Fainé assumes a mandate that will end in 2021 with three objectives: to consolidate the dialogue of this organization with the main international organizations, to reinforce the collaboration between the different partners and to promote financial inclusion, a social task shared by all its members. “We must be faithful to the main purpose of the WSBI: economic and social sustainability -said Fainé after accepting the position-. To do so, we must contribute to the achievement of sustainable development objectives by promoting progress and improving the quality of life in the multiple societies where we develop our activity”.
“Everything we do, such as savings banks and retail banks, can and should contribute to solving income inequality on a global scale. We are specially positioned to help solve the social demand for sustainable economic growth, solidly based and generalized, that is, that generates inclusive economy and social development not only in large cities, but also in rural areas”, said Fainé after his election.
On the other hand, the academician received last December the tribute of the Union of Businessmen of Chile during the celebration of the 70 years of this organization. From Santiago de Chile, Fainé highlighted the strength of the Chilean economy, which he considers a benchmark for Latin America.
