CARLOS CORTINA RIU received his doctorate with an outstanding cum laude in Advertising and Public Relations from the Camilo José Cela University (UCJC) in Madrid. Previously, he graduated in Protocol and Event Organization from the Camilo José Cela University and studied the University Master’s Degree in Protocol Management, Production, Organization and Event Design at UCJC, as well as the University Master’s Degree in Corporate and Institutional Act Management at the Higher Institute of Protocol and Events and the Master in Protocol and Ceremonial at the CEU-San Pablo University.

He has developed his professional and research activity in the disciplines of ceremonial, protocol and public relations, holding the position of Head of Institutional Relations at Carbones Pedraforca, S.A. (Saldes), and Chief of Protocol in the Berguedà County Council and in the Berga, Avià, Castellar del Riu, Olvan and Saldes municipalities. Being the author of books such as:“Pinzellades saldenques” (2004), “Reglament de Protocol, Cerimonial, Honors i Distincions per als Ajuntaments” (2010)“La Patum i els administradors” (2013), “El ceremonial de la Patum. De la procesión del Corpus Christi a la Plaça Cremada” (2014), “Miscel·lània de balls de gegants d’evocació patumaire. Volum I” (2017), “ Miscel·lània de balls de gegants d’evocació patumaire. Volum II” (2021).

He is also the author of research articles such as: “Protocolo eclesiástico, civil y popular del Corpus Christi y la Patum” (2015), with Dr. Carlos Fuente Lafuente, in the Magazine Cauriensia del Instituto Teológico “San Pedro de Alcántara” de la Diócesis Cáceres-Coria; “ La Patum,un credo de ceremonial y de fuego ” (2017), in Scientific Journals of the UNED; “Santoral de la Orden Ecuestre del Santo Sepulcro de Jerusalén ” (2018); y “ Los símbolos de la Monarquía a través del Protocolo” (2019), with the doctoral student Mr. Rafael Marcos Pardo. And he participates as a speaker or protocol advisor on TV3.

Dr. Carlos Cortina has participated or actively participates in non-profit organizations such as the Red Cross; the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU), as an advisor and member of the Assembly; founding partner of the Catalan Association of Protocol and Institutional Relations; in the Pontifical Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem, in the Sacred and Military Constantinian Order of Saint George, and  the Order of Saint Maurice and Saint Lazarus of the Royal House of Savoy. Having been distinguished with the Silver Medal and the Red Cross Constancy Medal (1991 and 1992), the Official Cross of the Order of Civil Merit (2000), the National Ceremonial and Protocol Award “Marqués de Mondéjar” (2001 ), the National Prize for Protocol and Institutional Relations (2017), the Gold Medal of Pope Leo XIII for the Custody of the Holy Land (2019) and the Benemerenza Gold Medal of the Constantinian Order (2021).
