JOSÉ M. BALDASANO RECIO holds a Bachelor’s Degree (1973) and a PhD (1983) in Chemical Sciences from the University of Barcelona (Spain), a Chemical Engineering Degree (1976) from the Institut National Polytechnique de Toulouse (France), and a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering (1979) from the University of Sherbrooke (Quebec, Canada).
He is Emeritus Professor of Environmental Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC). He was Director of the Department of Engineering Projects at UPC from May 2001 to November 2005, and Director of the Institute of Applied Petrochemistry (IPA) from 1988 to 1991, which he transformed into the Institute of Environmental Technology and Modelling (ITEMA) from 1992 to 1997. He founded and directed the PhD program in Environmental Engineering between 1986-2006 (the first of its kind in Spain), and co-founded and co-directed the Master’s in Environmental Engineering between 2006-2011. His R&D activities focus on air quality and climate change modelling, environmental impact studies, and waste management.
He was the founder and first director of the Earth Sciences Department at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) from 2005 to 2014, leading two major projects: CALIOPE Air Quality Forecast System and the WMO Barcelona Regional Dust Centre, established in 2007, and has participated in EC EARTH since 2008.
He was responsible for the legislative development on industrial waste in the Government of Catalonia from 1981 to 1984. Member and chairman of the Advisory Council for the Management of Industrial Waste of the Government of Catalonia from 1991 to 1995, and advisor to the Catalan Waste Agency from 2004 to 2010; and since 2011, advisor to the Council of Air Quality Experts. He was a member of the Environmental Advisory Council of the Spanish Ministry of the Environment from its creation in 1994 until 1997, president of ADECAGUA -Association for the Defense of Water Quality- from 1989-1991; member of the expert committee of the Spanish R&D Program on Environment of the CICYT; member of the “Working Group on Hazardous Wastes” of the ISWA (International Solid Wastes Association); consultant for the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and the World Bank; member of the “Steering Group on Ambient Air Quality” of the DGXI of the European Union; and member of the “Scientific Steering Committee” of the PRACE HPC European Initiative from October 2010 to December 2012. He is an expert of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) in the Task Force on Greenhouse Gas Inventories.
He has supervised 33 PhD theses. He is the author of 403 publications in scientific and technical journals; 446 communications and 271 presentations at conferences, 114 lectures, 28 seminars, and co-editor and author of 25 books on environmental topics. He has been co-chair of 5 international conferences on environmental topics. Reviewer for 61 scientific journals. Consultant and advisor to more than 90 companies and administrations.
