José Ramón Calvo, full academician of the Royal European Academy of Doctors-Barcelona 1914 (RAED) and president of its Institute of Interdisciplinary Research, warned of the high mortality related to smoking during his speech at the III International Act of the RAED, which took place between 15 and 22 July in various Baltic cities.
Professor of Health Education at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Calvo delivered the lecture “El tabaco, de producto deseado a producto maldito” (Tobacco, from the desired product to damn product), in which he reviewed the evolution of tobacco consumption in the past, when smoking was good seen, facing the situation today, when it is known that tobacco kills with special affectation to adolescents and young people.
“Tobacco is the only legal product that kills one in three consumers. Each cigar has 11 minutes of life for the smoker, and nearly one million of the world’s tobacco-dead are passive smokers. 25% of the world’s GDP, and for those who say they smoke little, smoking less than one cigarette a day increases the risk of death by 64%”, he argued.
