Sustainability and its implications for the management of organizations

Sustainability can be understood as those actions that aim to favor social and environmental activities at the same time, and that in turn help to improve the financial situation of the company. From the environmental perspective, it is the balance generated by the harmonious relationship between the human being and the nature that surrounds him and of which he is a part, and that this relationship remains over time, that is to say, is sustainable. From the social perspective, it is the voluntary help expressed in economic resources granted by companies to external projects of socioeconomic development.

Companies that adopt responsible and sustainable practices and invest in strategic projects within the scenario of sustainability can reduce their general costs, as a consequence of aspects, among which we can highlight, the improvement of the image before clients which will increase their sales, the improvement of the work environment, the attraction of investments at lower costs, the development of relations with the community and the relationship with national regulators.

The concept of sustainability has been considered from three important perspectives, the economic, social and environmental perspective, but although, given the repercussion of sustainability in business activity we must add the dimension of sustainable information. The starting point of the analysis of the European Directive 2014/95/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council of October 22, 2014, recommends the disclosure of non-financial information and information on diversity by certain large companies and certain groups.

Sustainability is and will be a new challenge for companies and entrepreneurs.
