
The Royal European Academy of Doctors (READ) will participate in Academies Week, organized by the Interacademic Council of Catalonia on the occasion of the opening of the new academic year, with the session “Vacunes i salut individual i col·lectiva, un equilibri necessari” (Vaccines and Individual and Collective Health: A Necessary Balance) — [see event page] — co-organized by the Royal Academy of Pharmacy of Catalonia and the Academy of Veterinary Sciences of Catalonia.
The event will take place on Monday, November 17, at 6:30 p.m., at the headquarters of the Academy of Pharmacy of Catalonia (Hospital Street 56, Barcelona), and will feature as speakers Maria Àngels Calvo, Professor at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Autonomous University of Barcelona, President of the Academy of Veterinary Sciences of Catalonia, Numerary Member of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Catalonia, of the Royal Academy of Pharmacy of Catalonia, and Numerary Member and Vice President of the READ; Jordi Martí, Professor of Economics and Accounting at the University of Barcelona, Director of the Master’s Program in Verification of Non-Financial Information at the same university and Numerary Member and Member of the Governing Board of the READ; and Núria Torner, Professor of Preventive Medicine and Public Health at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Barcelona and Numerary Member of the Royal Academy of Pharmacy of Catalonia.
The session forms part of a full academic program that began on Monday, November 10, with the session of the Catalan Academy of Gastronomy and Nutrition, held at the Espai Francesca Bonnemaison under the title “Women and Catalan Gastronomy: Talent Has No Gender.” Participants included Carme Ruscalleda, renowned chef and Vice President of the Academy of Gastronomy; Helena Garcia Melero, journalist and cooking enthusiast; Carlota Puigvert, chef at the restaurant Les Cols in Olot; and Casilda Agenjo, advocate for traditional Catalan cuisine. The event was moderated by journalist Antoni Bassas and concluded with remarks by Lluïsa Moret, President of the Provincial Council of Barcelona.
The Inaugural Session of the Academic Year took place on Wednesday, November 12, at the Palace of the Generalitat de Catalunya, in the presence of the President of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa; the Minister of Justice and Democratic Quality and President of the Interacademic Council, Ramon Espadaler; and the Honorary President of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Catalonia, host of this year’s inauguration and Vice President of the Interacademic Council, Josep Antoni Bombí, who presented the work of the academies. The inaugural lecture was delivered by Laureà Fernández-Cruz, member of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Catalonia.
The series continued on Thursday, November 13, with the session of the Academy of Jurisprudence and Legislation of Catalonia, titled “The Academy and Catalonia’s Own Legal System.” Participants included Lluís Jou, Honorary President of the institution; Maria Eugènia Alegret, Magistrate of the High Court of Justice of Catalonia and Vice President of the Academy; and Francesc Tusquets Trias de Bes, current President of the Academy.
That same day, the Royal Academy of Good Letters of Barcelona held its session under the title “The Awakening of Historical Heritage Awareness in 19th-Century Catalonia: The Role of the Academy of Good Letters.” Participants included Borja de Riquer, President of the Royal Corporation, and Academicians Pilar Vélez, Margalida Tomàs, and Manuel Jorba. Also on November 13, the Royal Academy of Economic and Financial Sciences hosted the session “Humanist Economy and Sustainability in the Age of Artificial Intelligence,” presented by its Numerary Member Vicente Liern.
The program will conclude with the session of the Royal Catalan Academy of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi on Wednesday, November 19, an event to be held at the Llotja de Mar in Barcelona. The session will include the awarding of Güell Foundation Scholarships for young artistic talent and the presentation of the critical edition of “Le petit chaperon vert” by Catalan composer Joan Lamote de Grignon.
Finally, on November 27, the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Barcelona will hold its own session, featuring Academicians Fèlix Ritort, Jordi Lorca, and Ignasi Ribas. Earlier, on October 3, the Institute for Catalan Studies and the Institute for Aranese Studies had jointly held a session to mark the inauguration of the latter’s new delegation.
