Antonio Gens, professor of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of the Higher Technical School of Civil Engineers, Channels and Ports of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia and full academician of the Royal European Academy of Doctors-Barcelona 1914 (RAED), has been recognized as a Laureate Engineer by the Spanish Royal Academy of Engineering in an event held in its headquarters, in Madrid, on September 26, which also recognized the professional and research career of the engineers César Sagaseta and José Luis de Justo.
Recognized for his quality in teaching by his own university and with the Kevin Nash Gold Medal awarded by the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, among other top-level international awards, Gens has now received recognition from the institution that will lead the excellence, quality and competence of Spanish engineering in its various disciplines and fields of action. The academician of RAED delivered a lecture on geomaterials and the history and solutions that geotechnics brings to complex problems in the construction of all types of structures. The academician of the Royal Academy of Engineering Antonio Ron, in turn responsible for conducting the solemn session, replied the speech.
Gens has worked in geotechnical research, consulting and teaching for four decades. His research fields have included unsaturated soils, soft clays and the development of multiphysical analyzes coupled in all of which he has made seminal contributions. He has also made important contributions in the areas of laboratory tests, field measurements and retroanalysis, constitutive and numerical models, in situ characterization of soils, soil freezing and soil improvement, slope stability, sterile dikes, tunnels and storage of nuclear waste.
He is the author or coauthor of more than 400 articles published in international journals and conferences. He has also published 15 book chapters and coedited 12 books and special magazines. He frequently participates in national and international conferences and technical meetings where he is in great demand as a lecturer. In addition to participating in major national and international engineering and geotechnical projects, his contributions in the geotechnical field have earned him numerous awards.
