Maria Àngels Calvo hosts the president of the Academy of Veterinary Sciences of Catalonia as a member of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Catalonia
Maria Àngels Calvo, full academician of the Royal European Academy of Doctors-Barcelona 1914 (RAED), president of its Section of Health Sciences and at the same time full academician of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Catalonia, answered last Sunday, 7 October, the admission speech as full academician of this Royal Corporation of Josep Llupià, president of the Academy of Veterinary Sciences of Catalonia. The recipient read the speech “Un mundo, una salud” (One world, one health).
Calvo celebrated the incorporation of the new academician, of whom he highlighted his solid formation and an unwavering personality in his professional and academic dedication. “It’s an income that we must celebrate especially because it consolidates the close relationship between Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, making once again the concept of a single health that the new academician develops in the work he presents to his new home”, said the academician of the RAED.
Maria Àngels Calvo, likewise, pointed out how Llupià developed a good part of her scientific work as a pharmacological veterinarian in the Research department of Almirall Laboratories, where he developed and evaluated new drugs of recognized efficacy and efficiency for the treatment of human diseases for more of three decades. “His field of study has been the cellular mediators in allergic and inflammatory processes and the action of new substances in functional pharmacological methods, in this way he has actively contributed in the discovery of products such as almagate, cleboprida, cinitapride, ebastine, piketoprofen and aclidinium”.
In his speech, Llupià made a historical tour that begins in the cylindrical seal of alabaster found in the city of Lagash, Mesopotamia, where the activity of the doctor is described not only as such but also as a veterinarian, serving this starting point to indicate the close relationship between Medicine and Veterinary Medicine throughout history.
