Montserrat Guillén Estany (Barcelona, 1964) is Chair professor of Quantitative Methods for Economics and Business at the University of Barcelona since 2001 and visiting professor at the City, Univeristy of London. She also was visiting professor at the University of Paris (Pantheon-Assas).
She graduated in Mathematics (speciality in Mathematical Statistics) at the University of Barcelona in 1987 and obtained the PhD doctorate in Economics and Business Sciences in 1992. Montserrat Guillén Estany (Barcelona, 1964) is a Full Professor of Quantitative Methods for Economics and Business at the University of Barcelona since 2001. She has been an honorary visiting professor at City, University of London, and a visiting professor at the University of Paris (Pantheon-Assas), the University of Texas at Austin, and the University of Berkeley. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics (specializing in Mathematical Statistics) from the University of Barcelona in 1987 and earned her PhD in Economics and Business Sciences in 1992. She completed a Master’s degree in Data Analysis at the University of Essex. Previously, she had studied economics at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom.
She currently leads the consolidated research group on Risk in Finance and Insurance (UBriskcenter) with twenty-five permanent researchers and twenty-five affiliated members from universities and academic institutions worldwide. She is an honorary member of the College of Actuaries of Catalonia. In 2011, she was elected president of the European Group of Risk and Insurance Economists, founded by the Geneva Association, an organization based in the USA and Switzerland that brings together leaders of the world’s main insurance groups.
She has published more than 200 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals, most of them in leading journals such as Risk Analysis. Her work has been cited by hundreds of authors and she is the most cited woman in actuarial sciences worldwide. Moreover, she is among the top ten most cited authors in the field of insurance. She is listed among the 25 most cited researchers in economics and finance in Spain and is the highest-ranked woman on this list. She is an editor of indexed journals occupying prominent positions in international rankings: North American Actuarial Journal (Editor-in-Chief since 2023), SORT – Statistics and Operations Research Transactions, ASTIN Bulletin – The Journal of the International Actuarial Association (Senior Editor), Journal of Risk and Insurance, and Geneva Risk and Insurance Review. She is also a member of the editorial board of other renowned scientific journals. She has published numerous book chapters and books, as well as monographs and invited papers. Among her publications, the book Quantitative Models for Operational Risk, published in 2012 with C. Bolancé, J. Gustafsson, and J.P. Nielsen by Chapman and Hall, and her contribution to the Handbook of Insurance published by Springer, stand out.
She has supervised twenty PhD theses at the UB and has been an external co-supervisor or evaluator at other universities (France, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Canada, and the USA).
She has received numerous research awards. She was honored by the Casualty Actuarial Society (USA) and received the Julio Castelo International Insurance Award. She was awarded the ICREA Academia distinction from the Government of Catalonia (in 2012 and 2019, on two occasions) for her research career after being selected among the best researchers in all areas of science.
She has led research projects obtained through competitive public calls, as well as several projects funded by private entities (MAPFRE Foundation, BBVA Foundation, Foundation for Financial Studies, AXA Research Fund, …). Her research group has received funding from the RecerCaixa program and has promoted the UB-Zurich Chair in Insurance and the Foundation Mutualidad de la Abogacía Chair on the economics of aging. She has delivered invited plenary lectures at international conferences in the actuarial field.
She has been a member of scientific advisory boards in international programs and management committees and has also carried out training and development of R&D&I programs with numerous companies. She is a reviewer for various public research agencies and for specialized journals. She has organized conferences, serving on their respective scientific committees. She is a member of the American Risk and Insurance Association, International Actuarial Association, American Statistical Association, Spanish Society of Statistics and Operations Research, Catalan Statistical Society, and Catalan Mathematical Society.
She is a Full Member of the Royal European Academy of Doctors and of the Royal Academy of Economic and Financial Sciences of the Institute of Spain. Occasionally, she participates in the media (TV, radio, and print) as a specialist. She speaks English, French, Spanish, and Catalan and can communicate in Russian and German.
