Dr. MONTSERRAT GUILLÉN ESTANY

ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS:

• Graduated in Mathematics (specialization in Mathematical Statistics) from the University of Barcelona in 1987 and obtained her PhD in Economics and Business Sciences in 1992.
• Completed a Master’s degree in Data Analysis at the University of Essex. She had previously studied Economics at the University of Cambridge, UK.

TEACHING AND PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITY:

• Full Professor of Quantitative Methods for Economics and Business at the University of Barcelona since 2001. Honorary visiting professor at City, University of London, and visiting professor at University of Paris (Panthéon-Assas), University of Texas at Austin, and University of California, Berkeley.
• Director of the UBriskcenter research group, with 25 permanent researchers and 25 affiliated members worldwide.
• Honorary member of the Catalan Actuarial Association.
• In 2011, elected President of the European Group of Risk and Insurance Economists, founded by the Geneva Association.
• Ranked among the 25 most cited researchers in Economics and Finance in Spain and the first woman in this ranking.
• Has led competitive public research projects and private collaborations (MAPFRE Foundation, BBVA Foundation, Foundation for Financial Studies, AXA Research Fund).
• Promoter of the UB-Zurich Insurance Chair and the Mutualidad de la Abogacía Chair in Economics of Ageing.
• Invited plenary speaker at international actuarial conferences and member of scientific boards and steering committees.
• Member of the American Risk and Insurance Association, International Actuarial Association, American Statistical Association, Spanish Society of Statistics and Operations Research, Catalan Statistical Society and Catalan Mathematical Society.
• Full Member of the Royal European Academy of Doctors and the Royal Academy of Economic and Financial Sciences of the Institute of Spain.

PUBLICATIONS:

• Author of over 200 peer-reviewed articles, many in leading journals such as Risk Analysis.
• The most cited woman worldwide in actuarial science and among the top 10 most cited authors in insurance.
• Editor-in-chief of the North American Actuarial Journal (since 2023) and editor of SORT, ASTIN Bulletin, among others.
• Books include Quantitative Models for Operational Risk (2012, Chapman & Hall) and contribution to the Handbook of Insurance (Springer).

AWARDS AND HONORS:

1. Awarded by the Casualty Actuarial Society (USA) and recipient of the International Julio Castelo Insurance Award.
2. Recipient of the ICREA Academia distinction (2012 and 2019) from the Government of Catalonia.
