The Future is Quantum: The Disruption Beyond AI and Its Impact on the Economy

Big Tech services and products shape our society, as our economy is now governed by data.

Today we are witnessing a profound technological disruption: that of content-generating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and that of future general AI.

However, the computing systems on which AI is based have significant structural limits, both in capacity and energy consumption. These structural limitations are not yet very noticeable to users, but they are to the industry. These limitations are very serious and can only be overcome with radically new computing paradigms.

The most promising of these new paradigms is quantum computing, a technology under construction and therefore a major opportunity for the future.

This presentation will outline the current context of the Big Tech sector, its two major ongoing revolutions—AI and quantum—and how their symbiosis will overcome the current barriers of the computing industry, continuing to provide exponential improvement in performance.

To do so, the talk will address the foundations of quantum physics, why and how its “magic” can only now be harnessed for computing, what geopolitical and economic impacts it entails, what investment plans are being developed internationally, and what initiatives organizations and companies can undertake to prepare to take full advantage of these future new capabilities.

Finally, the great opportunity to create in our city an internationally recognized hub for this emerging quantum industry will be presented, based on the excellence of its quantum academic community and its vibrant startup ecosystem.
