Introduction to Art Brut: Those Who Know How to Fly Within Themselves

Art Brut emerges from the complex lives of often vulnerable individuals, who find in creation an essential form of resistance. This art is distinguished by an intimate connection between the work and the creator, especially in “pure artists,” reflecting not only internal conflicts but also a singular creativity. It does not seek external validation or respond to public expectations, but rather emanates from a vital need to resist the limitations imposed by illness, confinement, or precariousness.

Creation becomes a transcendental gesture, sublimating suffering into symbolic forms that challenge contemporary art. It is crucial to defend this artistic freedom, avoiding any external influence that could shape or neutralize the essence of their work. Art Brut has impacted the artistic and academic world, challenging traditional conceptions and promoting an understanding of art as a therapeutic and transformative medium.

These artists are driven by a vital urgency. Elements such as automatism, the channeling of trauma, and the construction of alternative worlds are common. Art is a means of psychic survival, a refuge from delirium, or a way to reconstruct identity. The paradox is that, although the art system seeks authenticity, it often ignores this radical creativity because it doesn’t fit into its market logic.

Pure artists reveal to us immense human and artistic wealth, challenging stigmas and transforming suffering into art. Their creative freedom must be safeguarded, allowing their languages and universes to develop without external constraints, thus preserving the purity of their expression.
