Prof. María Vallet Regí (1946, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria)
PhD in Chemical Sciences. She is a professor at the Complutense University and leader of the Intelligent Biomaterials group (GIBI), integrated into the CIBERBBN and the i + 12 Research Institute. She is an academic of the Royal Academies of Engineering (RAI) and the National Pharmacy (RANF) and a Fellow of Biomaterials Science and Engineering (FBSE) and of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE). She has received several national and international awards, including the Jaume I 2018 in Basic Research, the 2008 National Research Award, the 2000 Franco-Spanish Award from the Societé Française de Chimie, the 2008 RSEQ Award in Inorganic Chemistry, the 2011 FEIQUE Research Award, the 2011 RSEQ Gold Medal, and the 2013 IUPAC Distinguished Women in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Miguel Catalán Research Award 2013, Lilly Distinguished Career Award in Chemistry 2016 and Julio Peláez Award for Pioneers in the Physical, Chemical and Mathematical Sciences from the Tatiana Pérez de Guzmán el Bueno Foundation 2017. Doctor Honoris Causa from the Universities of the Basque Country and Jaume I. Medal of Merit in Research and Education Univers itaria.
She is a pioneer in the field of mesoporous ceramic materials with applications in biomedicine. Her work uncovered, for the first time, the potential biomedical applications of these materials, particularly in the field of bone regeneration and controlled drug release systems. She is the author of more than 750 scientific articles, 14 books, 40 book chapters, and 13 patents. Her h-index is 92, she has been cited more than 37,000 times, and is on the “Highly Cited Researcher 2018” list (Clarivate Analytics).
