Suffice it to recall, in this sense, the words of <strong>Paracelsus<\/strong> in his work <strong>&#8220;Defenses&#8221;<\/strong>: &#8220;Everything is poison&#8230; Only the dose makes the poison&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>In the course of his speech, L\u00f3pez Mu\u00f1oz defended the hypothesis that Cervantes was influenced by the work <strong>&#8220;De Materia Medica&#8221;<\/strong>, by <strong>Dioscorides<\/strong>, translated and commented on by the Segovian Judeoconverse physician <strong>Andr\u00e9s Laguna<\/strong>, to be documented in pharmacotherapeutic matters. It&#8217;s based, among other elements and according to the opinion of the academician, on the existence of this technical work in the private Cervantine library, according to the reconstruction of the same carried out a few years ago. In fact, the &#8220;Dioscorides&#8221; is the only work of a scientific-medical nature that Cervantes cites throughout his literary production, specifically in <strong>&#8220;The Quixote&#8221;<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-76605 jetpack-lazy-image jetpack-lazy-image--handled\" src=\"https:\/\/raed.academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Miguel-de-Cervantes-dstNtc.jpeg\" alt=\"Miguel de Cervantes\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" data-attachment-id=\"76605\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/raed.academy\/farmacologia-obra-cervantes\/miguel-de-cervantes-dstntc\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/raed.academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Miguel-de-Cervantes-dstNtc.jpeg\" data-orig-size=\"400,225\" data-comments-opened=\"0\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"Miguel de Cervantes dstNtc\" data-image-description=\"&lt;p&gt;Miguel de Cervantes&lt;\/p&gt; \" data-medium-file=\"https:\/\/raed.academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Miguel-de-Cervantes-dstNtc.jpeg\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/raed.academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Miguel-de-Cervantes-dstNtc.jpeg\" data-lazy-loaded=\"1\" \/>In addition, it&#8217;s common, as the researcher has shown in his numerous publications on this subject, the use by Cervantes of similar descriptions to those provided by Laguna: the therapeutic properties of rosemary in the treatment of wounds and trauma in &#8220;The Quixote&#8221; , the narcotic effects of opium in <strong>&#8220;The jealous Extremaduran&#8221;<\/strong>, the psychedeleptic effects of some love filters in <strong>&#8220;The lawyer of glass&#8221;<\/strong> or the toxic effects of some poisons in <strong>&#8220;The English Spanish woman&#8221;<\/strong>. He has even confirmed that, in some cases, some paragraph of Laguna&#8217;s comments in his &#8220;Dioscorides&#8221; is almost literally cited, such as the purgative effect of rhubarb on excess cholera in &#8220;The Quixote&#8221; or the hallucinogenic effects of witch&#8217;s ointments in <strong>&#8220;The colloquium of dogs&#8221;<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Francisco L\u00f3pez Mu\u00f1oz concluded by commenting that Cervantes demonstrated in his works to have extensive knowledge of medicine, in addition to the reading and management of various therapeutic treaties, such as the aforementioned &#8220;Dioscorides&#8221;, also for its close relationship with the healthcare world through his family environment and friendships.
