The sponsors of the recipient were <strong>Ramon Canal<\/strong>, from the <strong>Department of Quantum Physics and Astrophysics<\/strong> of the UB, and <strong>Pilar Ruiz Lapuente<\/strong>, from the <a href=\"https:\/\/icc.ub.edu\"><strong>Institute of Cosmos Sciences<\/strong><\/a> of the UB and member of the project <strong>Supernova Cosmology<\/strong>, one of the two teams that contributed to the study that was worth the recognition of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svenskaakademien.se\"><strong>Swedish Academy<\/strong><\/a> to Perlmutter.<\/p>\n<p>Professor at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.berkeley.edu\"><strong>University of California-Berkeley<\/strong><\/a>, where he directs the <a href=\"https:\/\/bids.berkeley.edu\"><strong>Berkeley Institute for Data Science<\/strong><\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/bccp.berkeley.edu\"><strong>Berkeley Center for Cosmology<\/strong><\/a>, Perlmutter won the Nobel prize for his demonstration that the universe is expanding rapidly. An unexpected finding that supposed another discovery: the one of a dark energy unknown until the moment and that conforms the three quarters of the matter of the universe. In Barcelona, \u200b\u200bduring the ceremony of investiture, Perlmutter delved into these discoveries with the conference <strong>&#8220;What we learn when we learn that the universe is accelerating&#8221;<\/strong>, a journey over what has been the progress experienced from the understanding of this dark energy and the expansion of the cosmos.<\/p>\n<p>Perlmutter has also been the driving force behind a project to study dark energy by analyzing the brightness of very distant supernovae. For this, he led a proposal to build and launch a telescope using a satellite. Finally, NASA has approved the Broad Field Infrared Sounding Telescope (WFIRST), the latest version of this project, which also includes the study of exoplanets and other cosmological issues, and which is currently in the preliminary design stage.<\/p>\n<p>The University of Barcelona is one of the three European institutions, together with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cam.ac.uk\"><strong>University of Cambridge<\/strong><\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eso.org\"><strong>European Southern Observatory<\/strong><\/a> (ESO), which appears in the article on Perlmutter&#8217;s research, published in the renowned scientific journal <strong>&#8220;Astrophysical Journal&#8221;<\/strong>. One of the signatories of the study was UB researcher Pilar Ruiz Lapuente, who joined the Supernova Cosmology project, led by the Nobel himself, to lead the observations made from the <strong>Roque de los Muchachos Observatory<\/strong> (La Palma, Canary Islands). Un hallazgo inesperado que supuso otro descubrimiento: el de una energ\u00eda oscura desconocida hasta el momento y que conforma las tres cuartas partes de la materia del universo. En Barcelona, durante la ceremonia de investidura, Perlmutter profundiz\u00f3 en estos descubrimientos con la conferencia <strong>\"What we learn when we learn that the universe is accelerating\"<\/strong> (\u00bfQu\u00e9 aprendemos cuando aprendemos que el universo se est\u00e1 acelerando), un recorrido sobre cu\u00e1l ha sido el progreso experimentado desde la comprensi\u00f3n de esta energ\u00eda oscura y la expansi\u00f3n del cosmos.<\/p><p>La Universidad de Barcelona es una de las tres instituciones europeas, junto con la <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cam.ac.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Universidad de Cambridge<\/strong><\/a> y el <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eso.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Observatorio Europeo Austral<\/strong><\/a> (ESO), que figuran en el art\u00edculo sobre las investigaciones de Perlmutter, publicadas en la reconocida revista cient\u00edfica <strong>\"Astrophysical Journal\"<\/strong>.
