His social beat for childhood (1861-1948)), in which he narrates the life and legacy of what is considered the pioneer of paediatrics in Spain.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_46028\" style=\"width: 525px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-46028\" class=\"wp-image-46028\" src=\"http:\/\/raed.academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Joaquin-Callabed.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Joaqu\u00edn Callabed\" width=\"515\" height=\"332\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-46028\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Joaqu\u00edn Callabed<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In a work as rigorous as enjoyable, Callabed explains how his first studies in Barbastro and two prominent figures in his life as\u00a0the priest <strong>Jos\u00e9 Salamero<\/strong> and his cousin <strong>Joaqu\u00edn Costa<\/strong> decisively marked the path of Mart\u00ednez Vargas, who continued his studies in Zaragoza until graduating in Medicine to take his Doctorate studies in Madrid. His growing interest in paediatrics, a specialty practically unknown in Spain at the beginning of the 20th century, took him to New York, where he became a privileged student of <strong>Abraham Jacobi<\/strong>, a professor at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.columbia.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Columbia University<\/strong><\/a>, creator of the first children&#8217;s clinic in United States and, in turn, personal friend of <strong>Karl Marx<\/strong> and <strong>Friedrich Engels<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>On his return to Spain he obtained the chair of Paediatrics at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ugr.es\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>University of Granada<\/strong><\/a> and, later, at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ub.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>University of Barcelona<\/strong><\/a>, \u200b\u200bwhere he settled and did a good part of his career as a teacher and researcher. Although his legacy goes much further by his intense activism. Mart\u00ednez Vargas founded the <strong>Schools of Mothers<\/strong>, imported from France a pioneering institution such as the <strong>Drop of Milk<\/strong>, promoted the creation of nurseries for children of working mothers, promoted school hygiene and education for mothers, brought Roux&#8217;s diphtheria serum to Spain and published the <strong>&#8220;Tratado de Pediatr\u00eda&#8221;<\/strong> (Treaty of Paediatrics) that has served as a guide to several generations of Spanish paediatricians.
