{"id":42635,"date":"2018-03-06T08:19:48","date_gmt":"2018-03-06T08:19:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/raed.academy\/?p=42635"},"modified":"2018-03-08T10:24:11","modified_gmt":"2018-03-08T10:24:11","slug":"psychotropics-spanish-golden-age","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/raed.academy\/en\/psychotropics-spanish-golden-age\/","title":{"rendered":"The psychotropics in the Spanish Golden Age"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>&#8220;The Cervantes texts show that ointments made with a ritual or satanic excuse were recreational and recreational purposes&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/raed.academy\/en\/academicians\/dr-francisco-lopez-munoz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Francisco L\u00f3pez Mu\u00f1oz<\/strong><\/a>, full academician of the <strong>Royal European Academy of Doctors-Barcelona 1914<\/strong> (RAED), gave on February 20, at the headquarters of the Spanish <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ranm.es\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Royal National Academy of Medicine<\/strong><\/a>, the conference <strong>&#8220;Pomadas y ung\u00fcentos de bruja en la literatura del Siglo de Oro&#8221;<\/strong> (Ointments and witch ointments in literature of Spanish Golden Age), in which he analyzed the magical environment of the world of witchcraft from the perspective of the extra therapeutic use of psychotropic agents through the main authors of the Golden Age, mainly <strong>Miguel de Cervantes<\/strong> and <strong>Lope de Vega<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_42586\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42586\" class=\"wp-image-42586\" src=\"http:\/\/raed.academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Francisco-Lopez-Mu\u00f1oz.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Francisco L\u00f3pez Mu\u00f1oz\" width=\"340\" height=\"415\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-42586\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Francisco L\u00f3pez Mu\u00f1oz<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After an analysis of the phenomenon of witchcraft and the differential characteristics of the same in Golden Spain, reviewed the main agents used in the development of these ointments, highlighting the hallucinogenic plants of the solanaceae family (henbane, mandrake, belladonna, stramonium&#8230;), along with other ingredients of animal origin, such as substances obtained from certain amphibians (frogs or toads), very present in the symbolism associated with witchcraft. He also addressed the study of the possible documentary sources of these writers in pharmacological matters, highlighting the <strong>Dioscorides<\/strong> commented by <strong>Andr\u00e9s Laguna<\/strong> and the <strong>Natural History<\/strong> of <strong>Pliny the Elder<\/strong> and his commented editions by some contemporary authors.<\/p>\n<p>Special attention was given to the exemplary novel <strong>El coloquio de los perros<\/strong> (The colloquy of dogs), in which Cervantes masterfully describes the psychotropic effects of the mixtures of hallucinogenic agents administered topically (extracorporeal trips, visual hallucinations, pleasurable sensations&#8230;), in a very similar way to the one made by the professor of Tomist theology of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uah.es\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>University of Alcal\u00e1<\/strong><\/a> <strong>Pedro Ciruelo<\/strong> and by the Segovian doctor <strong>Andr\u00e9s Laguna<\/strong>.
