In addition, the newspaper <strong>El Siglo de Torre\u00f3n<\/strong> devoted an extensive report on 24 August to his latest research in the <strong>Historical Archive of the Former College of San Ignacio de Loyola<\/strong> in Coahuila.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong>\u201cPrelude to Anti-Religious Persecution in Mexico,\u201d<\/strong> the expert recalls the centenary of the Cristero War and places its outbreak in northern Zacatecas and southern Durango. In this regard, he explains that in the summer of 2022 the Archbishop of Durango, <strong>Faustino Armend\u00e1riz<\/strong>, asked him to investigate documents and testimonies from that region. That work led, later that same year, to the first <strong>Regional Forum on the Cristero War<\/strong>, held in Chalchihuites, the place where the first armed uprising began. It all started a century ago, during the feast of <strong>Saint Ignatius of Loyola<\/strong>, when the so-called Calles Law closed churches and prohibited public worship. Social unrest turned into open persecution. Children, elderly people, women, laypeople and priests were arrested, tortured and killed for celebrating or secretly attending Mass, making the sign of the cross when passing a church, or refusing to blaspheme. The overwhelming majority preferred death to apostasy.<\/p>\n<p>Sada describes the Cristero War as both an epic and a tragedy, an episode silenced in archives and school textbooks. He argues that this concealment stemmed from the unpopularity of a policy that attacked freedom of conscience and from a subsequent deception: the Government of <strong>Emilio Portes Gil<\/strong> persuaded the bishops to sign a peace agreement in exchange for religious freedom just when the Cristero forces were on the verge of victory. The agreement was used to disarm and kill leaders and combatants until 1929, marking the end of the first stage of the rebellion. That silence began to break in the 1970s with the research of the Franco-Mexican historian <strong>Jean Meyer<\/strong>, who consulted ecclesiastical archives and gathered testimonies from combatants, survivors and repressors. The path opened by Meyer has enabled regional scholars to recover a history that official accounts had preferred to keep closed.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-133613\" src=\"https:\/\/raed.academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/LicPexels-Mejico-Mexico-Enrique-Sada-Intervencion-Dst.webp\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raed.academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/LicPexels-Mejico-Mexico-Enrique-Sada-Intervencion-Dst.webp 600w, https:\/\/raed.academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/LicPexels-Mejico-Mexico-Enrique-Sada-Intervencion-Dst-440x264.webp 440w\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"360\" \/>Sada returns to the same events in <strong>\u201cOne Hundred Years after the Cristero War in Mexico,\u201d<\/strong> where he explains how the conditions that gave rise to the Cristero War began to take shape a year before the uprising, when an earthquake devastated the region. Although the Government came to the aid of the victims, the anti-Catholic measures already under way had generated widespread popular rejection. The confrontation between the Church, which was assisting those affected, and government representatives created resentment that would become, to a large extent, a trigger for the conflict that began months later. It was an episode, the historian explains, completely omitted from contemporary reports.<\/p>\n<p>For its part, in <strong>El Siglo de Torre\u00f3n<\/strong>, journalist <strong>Sa\u00fal Rodr\u00edguez<\/strong> devotes the report <strong>\u201cResearcher Discovers Old Registers and Censuses of Viesca\u201d<\/strong> to the findings made by the READ collaborator in the Historical Archive of the Former College of San Ignacio de Loyola. These consist of a series of documents that make it possible to reconstruct the ethnic, geographical and political consolidation of the former Comarca Lagunera at the beginning of the 19th century. Sada notes that these records show how settlements and ranches expanded westwards, towards what would later become the town of Matamoros and the El Carrizal ranch, the nucleus from which Torre\u00f3n emerged. During the viceregal period, a register of indigenous people was ordered to be sent to the archbishopric of Nueva Vizcaya, but it has not been found.
