Dr. Aquilino J. Garc\u00eda Perea, during his presentation at the 10th International Academic Meeting of the RAED in Rhine, Germany<\/p><\/div>\n

Aquilino Garc\u00eda Perea<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, corresponding academician of the Royal European Academy of Doctors<\/strong> (RAED), reflected on the emerging drugs that are changing the clinical approach to overweight and obesity in the lecture \u201cNew drugs for weight control and reduction\u201d<\/strong>, which he presented during the 10th International Academic Meeting<\/strong> held by the Royal Corporation between 15 and 20 March in several German cities under the general title \u201cThe Rhine as a current of knowledge: cross-border dialogues\u201d<\/strong>. According to the expert, these new medicines act by imitating intestinal hormones that regulate appetite and digestion and are effective in reducing and controlling weight, although they are not magic solutions.<\/p>\n

The academician explained how these drugs generate a feeling of satiety, delay gastric emptying and, in some cases, improve glycaemic control. The results, he noted, are significant: semaglutide (Ozempic<\/strong>, Wegovy<\/strong> and the oral version Rybelsus<\/strong>) achieves an average loss of 10-15% of body weight. Tirzepatide (Mounjaro<\/strong>), with dual action, achieves reductions of up to 20%. Among the most promising drugs under investigation are retatrutide, with a triple mechanism of action, which exceeds 24% weight loss, and orforglipron, an oral option that reaches around 15%. However, side effects are frequent and appear in mild forms as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and constipation, although more serious complications such as pancreatitis, gastroparesis and thyroid or biliary problems have also been reported in less common cases. In addition, there is already talk of \u201cOzempic face\u201d<\/strong> due to the loss of facial fat.<\/p>\n

\"\"The key to weight control, Garc\u00eda Perea pointed out, lies in lifestyle. The use of any of these drugs must be accompanied by profound changes in diet and habits, prioritising the intake of quality proteins such as eggs, fish, poultry and legumes in order to preserve muscle mass. This should be complemented by fibre, fruit, vegetables and healthy fats, such as olive oil, avocado and nuts. He also highlighted the consumption of slow-release carbohydrates and fermented foods to care for the microbiota, as well as abundant hydration and the need to avoid heavy meals, fried foods, sugars and alcohol. To this, the academician added strength training adapted to age and physical characteristics at least two sessions per week to prevent excessive muscle loss, together with quality rest.<\/p>\n

Regarding who may undergo treatment with these new drugs, the expert explained that they are mainly intended for people with obesity or overweight associated with conditions such as type 2 diabetes or high cardiovascular risk, always under medical prescription, stressing that they are in no case an aesthetic resource. Garc\u00eda Perea also recalled that when treatment is discontinued, around 60% of the weight lost is regained if solid habits have not been consolidated. For this reason, the period of medication should be used as a metabolic truce in order to build a new relationship with food and exercise.<\/p>\n

A recognised communicator in the fields of pharmacology and nutrition, Garc\u00eda Perea is an honorary academician of the Spanish Academy of Nutrition<\/strong>, corresponding academician of the Royal Academy of Pharmacy of Catalonia<\/strong>, member of the Board of Directors<\/strong> of the Spanish Society of Nutrition<\/strong> and of the General Council of Official Colleges of Pharmacists<\/strong>, honorary member of the Spanish Society of Microbiota, Probiotics and Prebiotics<\/strong> and member of the Advisory Council<\/strong> of the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition<\/strong>.
