{"id":186785,"date":"2026-06-18T08:43:43","date_gmt":"2026-06-18T08:43:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/raed.academy\/?p=186785"},"modified":"2026-06-18T08:44:48","modified_gmt":"2026-06-18T08:44:48","slug":"the-significance-of-gaudis-life-and-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/raed.academy\/en\/the-significance-of-gaudis-life-and-work\/","title":{"rendered":"The Significance of Gaud\u00ed\u2019s Life and Work"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_186468\" style=\"width: 315px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-186468\" class=\"wp-image-186468\" src=\"https:\/\/raed.academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Ignacio-Buqueras-y-Bach-imgcp.webp\" alt=\"Ignacio Buqueras\" width=\"305\" height=\"381\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-186468\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-186468\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Ignacio Buqueras<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/raed.academy\/academicos\/dr-ignacio-buqueras-bach\/\"><em><strong>Ignacio Buqueras<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, President of the <strong>Adiprope Foundation for the Dissemination and Promotion of Spain\u2019s World Heritage<\/strong>, Honorary President of the <strong>Spanish Confederation of Senior Citizens\u2019 Organisations<\/strong>, Numerary Member of the <strong>Royal Academy of Doctors of Spain<\/strong> and Emeritus Member of the <strong>Royal European Academy of Doctors<\/strong> (RAED), shares with the academic community the article <strong>\u201cGaud\u00ed in Madrid\u201d<\/strong>, in which he discusses the heritage significance of the work of the renowned Catalan architect and the events recently promoted to recognise the international dimension of his figure.<\/p>\n<h2>Gaud\u00ed in Madrid<\/h2>\n<h3>Gaud\u00ed and Popes Francis and Leo XIV<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Antoni Gaud\u00ed<\/strong> is the only architect in world history to have had seven of his buildings designated as World Heritage Sites by <strong>UNESCO<\/strong>: Park G\u00fcell, Palau G\u00fcell and Casa Mil\u00e0 in Barcelona, inscribed in 1984; and, in 2005, Casa Vicens, the Nativity fa\u00e7ade and crypt of the Sagrada Fam\u00edlia, Casa Batll\u00f3 and the crypt of the Col\u00f2nia G\u00fcell. Gaud\u00ed is one of the most important geniuses of European culture, with a strong international profile. His creative, innovative and meticulously designed constructions bring us closer to nature and speak to us, inspire us and invite us to reflect on Gospel values. Gaud\u00ed devoted the final years of his life entirely to the construction of the Sagrada Fam\u00edlia, which became his home in November 1925.<\/p>\n<p>Pope <strong>Leo XIV<\/strong> undertook a historic apostolic visit to Spain, during which he visited the Sagrada Fam\u00edlia to inaugurate the Tower of Jesus Christ, the tallest tower in both the basilica and the world. It is half a metre lower than Montju\u00efc hill. Gaud\u00ed did not wish the work of humankind to surpass that of nature. The tower is crowned by a large four-armed cross measuring 17 metres in height and 13.5 metres in width.<\/p>\n<p>It should be recalled that Pope <strong>Francis<\/strong>, on 14 April 2025, seven days before his death, signed the decree recognising the heroic virtues of Antoni Gaud\u00ed, thereby initiating the process towards his beatification. Gaud\u00ed is regarded as God\u2019s architect because of his work on the design and construction of the Sagrada Fam\u00edlia. The step taken by Pope Francis is the first on the long, complex and difficult path towards his possible declaration as a saint.<\/p>\n<h3>Series of eight round tables commemorating the centenary of Antoni Gaud\u00ed\u2019s death<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_182311\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-182311\" class=\"wp-image-182311 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/raed.academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Antoni-Gaudi-CC0-wikepedia.org-1.17.webp\" alt=\"Antoni Gaud\u00ed\" width=\"350\" height=\"300\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-182311\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-182311\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Antoni Gaud\u00ed<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Adiprope Foundation\u2019s principal objectives are to improve knowledge, conservation, appreciation, dissemination and promotion of Spain\u2019s World Heritage. In view of the celebration of the <strong>International Gaud\u00ed Year<\/strong>, commemorating the centenary of his death, it agreed to promote and organise a series of eight round tables on his life, his extraordinary work and his powerful international influence. A significant precedent for this series was the programme of six round tables organised in Madrid in 2002 by the <strong>Independent Foundation<\/strong>, which I chaired, to mark the 150th anniversary of Gaud\u00ed\u2019s birth.<\/p>\n<p>The series was presented with significant public visibility at Casa Botines, a work by Gaud\u00ed in Le\u00f3n; the <strong>Royal Casino of Madrid<\/strong>; the <strong>Centre de Lectura de Reus<\/strong>; and the Royal European Academy of Doctors. The round tables were held at <strong>Camilo Jos\u00e9 Cela University<\/strong>, the <strong>C\u00edrculo Catal\u00e1n de Madrid<\/strong>, the <strong>Official College of Architects of Madrid<\/strong>, <strong>CaixaForum Madrid<\/strong>, the <strong>Ateneo de Madrid<\/strong>, the <strong>C\u00edrculo de Bellas Artes<\/strong>, the <strong>Spanish Episcopal Conference<\/strong> and <strong>San Pablo-CEU University<\/strong>, in collaboration with the Royal Academy of Doctors of Spain.<\/p>\n<p>These eight round tables will be followed by two important events assessing the conclusions of the series. The first will take place in Madrid, at the <strong>Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando<\/strong>, on 16 June, and the second in Barcelona, at the <strong>C\u00edrculo Ecuestre<\/strong>, on 28 June. In July, the Adiprope Foundation will publish an important book bringing together the four presentation events, the eight round tables and the two concluding
