Dr Francesc Torralba<\/p><\/div>\n

Francesc Torralba<\/strong><\/u><\/em><\/a>, Director of the Ethos Chair of Applied Ethics<\/strong> at the Ramon Llull University<\/strong> and of the Chair of Christian Thought<\/strong> of the Bishopric of Urgell<\/strong>, member of the Dicastery for Culture and Education<\/strong> of the Holy See and a Numerary Member of the Royal European Academy of Doctors<\/strong> (READ), continues to feature in interviews and media appearances after being awarded the Josep Pla Prize<\/strong>, granted by the publishing house Destino<\/strong>, for the work \u201cAnatomia de l\u2019esperan\u00e7a.\u201d<\/em> On this occasion, the renowned thinker held a conversation with journalists Ricard Maxenchs<\/strong> and Marta Maxenchs<\/strong> in the popular section \u201cHablando con los Maxenchs\u201d<\/em> of the newspaper \u201cEl Mundo Deportivo,\u201d<\/em> published on 28 February.<\/p>\n

In addition, on 20 February the academic defended his latest doctoral thesis at the International University of Catalonia<\/strong>, entitled \u201cRecepci\u00f3 i interpretaci\u00f3 de l\u2019obra de S\u00f8ren Kierkegaard (1813\u20131855) en la psicoter\u00e0pia existencial de Rollo May.\u201d<\/em> Supervised by Xavier Escribano and Maria Fern\u00e1ndez-Cap\u00f3 within the framework of the doctoral programme in Health Sciences, the defence received the distinction of excellent cum laude<\/em>. Torralba now holds five doctorates: in Philosophy (1992), Theology (1997), Pedagogy (2018), Art History (2022) and now Health Sciences (2026).<\/p>\n

In an interview marked by an intimate and informal tone, the academic defines himself as a professor who seeks to teach how to think. \u201cI believe that philosophy should stand at the centre of the public square as it did in Athens, in the agora. Stimulating critical thinking, the search for truth and the pursuit of happiness constitute the basic tasks of philosophical practice. In an accelerated, dispersed and noisy environment, this task entails a certain complexity.\u201d He also explains how a secondary school teacher awakened his philosophical vocation, just as he himself now tries to do with his students by following the same example in a dialogue that activates intelligence, imagination and memory. In any case, he notes that along this path work, perseverance, the help of others and the practice of self-criticism are essential.<\/p>\n

Torralba identifies as one of the most gratifying moments of his life completing the 2024 Barcelona Marathon together with his two daughters, N\u00faria<\/strong> and Anna<\/strong>, and his niece Laia<\/strong>. And, logically, he acknowledges that the most difficult moment has been accepting the death of his son Oriol, who died in a mountain accident at the age of 26 while he himself was accompanying him. \u201cAccepting is not overcoming. It means integrating his absence into one\u2019s own being and learning from an experience as tragic and traumatic as this in order to help those who suffer similar situations,\u201d he explains. The work \u201cAnatomia de l\u2019esperan\u00e7a\u201d<\/em> is one way of doing so, he reveals, as were his two previous books: \u201cLa Paraula que em sost\u00e9\u201d<\/em> and \u201cNo hi ha paraules. Com assumir la mort d\u2019un fill,\u201d<\/em> in which he shares his grief.<\/p>\n

S\u00f8ren Kierkegaard<\/p><\/div>\n

Speaking about his daily life, Torralba reveals that one of his favourite moments is going out for a run at six in the morning. He declares himself a supporter of FC Barcelona, explains that his two favourite athletes are Kilian Jornet<\/strong> and Carolina Mar\u00edn<\/strong>, and says that his impossible dream would be to attend a dialogue between Friedrich Nietzsche<\/strong> and S\u00f8ren Kierkegaard<\/strong>, to whom he dedicates his latest doctoral thesis and who is one of the figures he has studied most throughout his academic career. He concludes by offering several pieces of life advice: \u201chumility to learn from those who already know, perseverance to improve one\u2019s abilities and hope when starting new projects.\u201d In this regard, he affirms that it is precisely these new projects, such as books and exhibitions, that keep him alive.<\/p>\n

A lecturer and disseminator of Christian humanism in major Catalan media outlets such as Catalunya R\u00e0dio<\/strong> and the newspapers \u201cLa Vanguardia\u201d<\/em> and \u201cEl Punt Avui,\u201d<\/em> the academic is the author of notable books such as \u201cEl sentit de la vida\u201d<\/em> (2008), \u201cNo passeu de llarg\u201d<\/em> (2010), \u201cEl valor de tenir valors\u201d<\/em> (2012), \u201cUn mar d\u2019emocions\u201d<\/em> (2013), \u201cC\u00f3rrer per pensar i sentir\u201d<\/em> (2015), \u201cSaber dir no\u201d<\/em> (2016) and \u201cM\u00f3n vol\u00e0til\u201d<\/em> (2018). During the pandemic, Torralba published the books \u201cHumildad,\u201d<\/em> \u201cParaules de consol. En la mort d\u2019un \u00e9sser estimat,\u201d<\/em> \u201cFormar personas. La teolog\u00eda de la educaci\u00f3n de Edith Stein,\u201d<\/em> \u201cVivir en lo esencial. Ideas y preguntas despu\u00e9s de la pandemia,\u201d<\/em> and \u201cL\u2019\u00e8tica algor\u00edtmica,\u201d<\/em> which received the Bones Lletres Prize for Humanistic Essay<\/strong> awarded by the Royal Academy of Good Letters<\/strong> and the publishing house Edicions62<\/strong>; \u201cLa fa\u00e7ana de la Gl\u00f2ria de la Sagrada Fam\u00edlia. Fonts espirituals i teol\u00f2giques de l\u2019escatologia d\u2019Antoni Gaud\u00ed,\u201d<\/em> the result of his fourth doctoral thesis; \u201cCuando todo se desmorona. Meditar con Kierkegaard\u201d<\/em> (2023), \u201cNo hi ha paraules. Com assumir la mort d\u2019un fill\u201d<\/em> (2024) and \u201cBenaurances per a agn\u00f2stics\u201d<\/em> (2024). He was also recognised with the Ratzinger Prize 2023<\/strong>, awarded by the Vatican Foundation Joseph Ratzinger\u2013Benedict XVI<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
