The event took place in the Assembly Hall of the <strong>Higher School of Industrial, Aerospace and Audiovisual Engineering of Terrassa<\/strong>, a centre affiliated with the <strong>Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Catalunya<\/strong>, under the title <strong>\u00abRhythms and Probabilities: The Mathematics of Jazz.\u00bb<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_177599\" style=\"width: 319px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-177599\" class=\"wp-image-177599\" src=\"https:\/\/raed.academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Pilar-Bayer-Isant.webp\" sizes=\"(max-width: 309px) 100vw, 309px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raed.academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Pilar-Bayer-Isant.webp 500w, https:\/\/raed.academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Pilar-Bayer-Isant-150x150.webp 150w, https:\/\/raed.academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Pilar-Bayer-Isant-440x440.webp 440w, https:\/\/raed.academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Pilar-Bayer-Isant-400x400.webp 400w, https:\/\/raed.academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Pilar-Bayer-Isant-300x300.webp 300w\" alt=\"Pilar Bayer\" width=\"309\" height=\"309\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-177599\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-177599\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr Pilar Bayer<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In line with the aims of the series, the session explored the connection between music, science and critical thinking through interdisciplinary cultural experiences. On this occasion, it examined the relationship between jazz and mathematics, and how rhythms, patterns and musical structures engage in dialogue with complex mathematical concepts, as explained by the organizers. The event was introduced by <strong>Jordi Voltas<\/strong>, Director of the centre, and also featured the participation of <strong>Ignasi Terraza<\/strong>, an internationally renowned jazz pianist, the <strong>UPC Jazz Combo<\/strong> and the <strong>UPC Terrassa Choir<\/strong>. All of them contributed to demonstrating the theses presented by Bayer, combining outreach, live music and an intense connection with the audience.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond her long and distinguished career as a lecturer and researcher, Bayer is a well-known communicator of the relationship between music and mathematics. In this regard, last October she published the article <strong>\u00abThe Mathematical Basis of Digital Sound\u00bb<\/strong> in the journal <strong>\u00abSerra d\u2019Or\u00bb<\/strong>, in which she examined the connection between mathematics and music across centuries of scientific and artistic thought, analysing the numerical laws that make it possible to understand and reproduce sound. In other talks on the subject, always from an outreach perspective, the expert has highlighted the simultaneous use of musical and mathematical languages. She has also presented the mathematical concepts inherent in new technologies that enable both the reproduction of music in digital formats and its generation through artificial intelligence techniques.<\/p>\n<p>The academic was invested last November as magistra honoris causa by the Faculty of Mathematics and Statistics of the Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Catalunya. Bayer is also a Numerary Member of the <strong>Reial Acad\u00e8mia de Ci\u00e8ncies i Arts de Barcelona<\/strong> and of the <strong>Real Academia de Ciencias Exactas, F\u00edsicas y Naturales<\/strong>. She has been awarded the Narc\u00eds Monturiol Medal for Scientific and Technological Merit and, last December, received the <strong>Creu de Sant Jordi<\/strong>, the highest distinction granted by the <strong>Government of Catalonia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pilar Bayer leads the final session of the HarmoniesUPC series, &#8220;Ritmes i probabilitats.
