He lived in Barcelona, a city of which he feels deeply proud, and where he studied Medicine at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uab.cat\/web\/universitat-autonoma-de-barcelona-1345467954409.html\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>UAB (Autonomous University of Barcelona)<\/strong><\/a>, graduating in 1991.<\/li>\n<li>After working for a year as a general practitioner during the Barcelona Olympic period, he moved to England to specialize in Neurosurgery. His specialization was mainly carried out at the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uclh.nhs.uk\/our-services\/our-hospitals\/national-hospital-neurology-and-neurosurgery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery<\/strong><\/a>\u201d in London, a pioneering center in Neurosurgery.<\/li>\n<li>After completing his residency in 2003, he remained at the same center to complete a fellowship in spine surgery and to finish his thesis entitled \u201cArthroplasty as an Alternative to Arthrodesis in the Treatment of Cervical Spondylosis,\u201d which he defended at the UAB in 2004.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>TEACHING AND PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITY<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This work allowed him to serve as a consultant for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medtronic.com\/es-es\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Medtronic<\/strong><\/a> for four years, traveling internationally to assist and support surgeons with the Bryan disc implantation technique (the first effective cervical arthroplasty).<\/li>\n<li>During that period, he also received recognition for the best original work from the CSRS (Cervical Spine Research Society) by winning the prestigious Mario Boni Award for his research on \u201c<em>Association of Apolipoprotein E4 with Spondylotic Myelopathy<\/em>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>After returning to Spain, he worked as a neurosurgeon in Girona and later moved to Barcelona, where he currently lives and works.<\/li>\n<li>He is currently the Director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hospitalvirgendelmar.es\/unidades-funcionales-columna-multidisciplinar#:~:text=En%20el%20Hospital%20Universitario%20Virgen%20del%20Mar%20estamos,problemas%20como%20la%20lumboci%C3%A1tica%2C%20cervicobraquialgia%2C%20lumbalgia%20y%20cervicalgia.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Spine Surgery Unit at Hospital del Mar<\/strong><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Once established in Barcelona, Dr. Lafuente joined the \u201cEthics &amp; Bylaws\u201d Committee of the <a href=\"https:\/\/wfns.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies<\/strong><\/a> for eight years starting in 2005.<\/li>\n<li>He has also been a faculty member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eans.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS)<\/strong><\/a> since 2007, as well as of the Spine Section of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS) since 2010.<\/li>\n<li>In 2015, he was appointed President-Elect of the EANS, assuming the position of President in 2017, which he still holds. He also serves as President of the <a href=\"https:\/\/scnc.cat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Catalan Society of Neurosurgery<\/strong><\/a>. His main objective as president is the standardization of undergraduate and postgraduate education worldwide as a first step toward harmonizing the treatment of neurosurgical patients.
