Emigrated to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Israel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Israel<\/a><\/strong> in 1950.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/prizes\/chemistry\/2004\/summary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2004<\/a><\/strong> (with Aaron Ciechanover and Irwin Rose).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>UNIVERSITY DEGREES<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>M.D. (1965) and Ph.D. (1969) from the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.huji.ac.il\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hebrew University of Jerusalem \u2013 Hadassah Medical School<\/a><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Served as a physician in the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Israel_Defense_Forces\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Israel Defense Forces<\/a><\/strong> (1965\u20131967).<\/li>\n<li>Postdoctoral fellow at the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucsf.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of California, San Francisco<\/a><\/strong> (1969\u20131972), in the laboratory of Gordon Tomkins.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITY<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Professor of Biochemistry at the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/rapaport.technion.ac.il\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rappaport Faculty of Medicine<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.technion.ac.il\/en\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Technion \u2013 Israel Institute of Technology<\/a><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Appointed Professor (1980) and Distinguished Professor (2000) at Technion.<\/li>\n<li>Founder and Head of the Department of Biochemistry at the Technion Faculty of Medicine, Haifa.<\/li>\n<li>Co-discoverer of the protein degradation system mediated by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ubiquitin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ubiquitin<\/a><\/strong>, which tags proteins for destruction in the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Proteasome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">proteasome<\/a><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>His research explained how cells control division, DNA repair and immune responses through selective protein degradation.<\/li>\n<li>Established the molecular basis of diseases such as specific cancers and cystic fibrosis, paving the way for new treatments.<\/li>\n<li>Member of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.academy.ac.il\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities<\/a><\/strong> (2000).<\/li>\n<li>Foreign Member of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasonline.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. National Academy of Sciences<\/a><\/strong> (2003).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>AWARDS AND HONOURS<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/prizes\/chemistry\/2004\/summary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nobel Prize in Chemistry<\/a><\/strong> (2004).<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Israel_Prize\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Israel Prize in Biochemistry<\/a><\/strong> (1994).<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gairdner.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gairdner International Award<\/a><\/strong> (1999).<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/laskerfoundation.org\/awards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Albert &amp;
