Montserrat Guillén Estany (Barcelona, 1964) is Chair professor  of Quantitative Methods for Economics and Business at the University of Barcelona since 2001 and visiting professor at the City, Univeristy of London. She also was visiting professor at the University of Paris (Pantheon-Assas).

She graduated in Mathematics (speciality in Mathematical Statistics) at the University of Barcelona in 1987 and obtained the PhD doctorate in Economics and Business Sciences in 1992. She got her Master in Data Analysis at the University of Essex (United Kingdom) and she was visiting researcher at the University of Texas in Austin (United States) in 1994. Previously she studied economics at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom.

At present she is the director the consolidated research group on Risk in Finance and Insurance (UBriskcenter) with twenty-five permanent researchers and twenty-five affiliated from universities and academic institutions all over the world. She is an honorary member of the College of Actuaries of Catalonia. In 2011 she was elected president of the European Group of Risk and Insurance Economists, founded by the Geneva Association, an organization based in the US and Switzerland which brings together leaders of the major insurance groups in the world.

She has published about 200 articles in peer-reviewed journals, most of which in highly ranked journals such as Risk Analysis. Her work has been cited by hundreds of authors. These indicators indicate a prominent position among internationally recognized researchers in the field of quantitative risk management and insurance economics.

She has been editor of indexed journals which are well known in international rankings: SORT- Statistics and Operations Research Transactions (chief-editor), ASTIN Bulletin – The Journal of the International Actuarial Association (senior editor), Journal of Risk and Insurance, The Scientific World Journal and Geneva Risk and Insurance Review. She is also part of the editorial board of many scientific journals.

She has published numerous book chapters, books and articles by invitation. Notably, the book Quantitative Models for Operational Risk published in 2012 with C. Bolancé, J. Gustafsson and JP Nielsen by Chapman and Hall, one of the largest and most prestigious publishers of scientific books.

She has supervised fifteen doctoral theses at the UB and has been external co-director of two doctoral thesis at the University of Copenhagen and the City University London, respectively. She has been part of many doctoral theses juries both in Spain and abroad (France, Belgium, UK and USA).

She has received numerous research awards. She was recognized by the Casualty Actuarial Society (USA) and received the International Prize of Insurance Julio Castelo. She was awarded the distinction ICREA Academia from the Generalitat de Catalunya (in 2012 and in 2019 on two occasions) for her research career after being selected among the best researchers from all fields of science.

She has participated in many research projects, most of the times as principal investigator, she obtained in competitive public calls, as well as in several projects funded by private entities (Mapfre Foundation, BBVA Foundation, Foundation for Financial Studies, AXA Research Fund, .. .). Her research group has received funding in the RecerCaixa program for the study of active aging and also her team promotes the chair UB-Zurich Insurance, to promote innovation and postgraduate training of actuaries.

She has given plenary lectures by invitation in international congresses (IAA, ASTIN, ISI, etc.), most notably her participation in the Pension Research Council of Philadelphia. She has presented papers at national and international conferences.

She has served on scientific advice in international programs and steering committees and she has also conducted training and development of R + D + I programs with many companies.

She is part of evaluation panels of public research agencies and she has been for reviewer for more than 30 journals. She has organized conferences as part of scientific committees. She is a member of the American Risk and Insurance Association, the International Actuarial Association, the American Statistical Association, the Spanish Society of Statistics and Operations Research, the Statistics Catalan Society and the Catalan Society of Mathematics. She is Academic numberary member of the Royal Academy of Doctors, an academy associated to the Institute of Spain.

Occasionally, she participates in the media (TV, radio and newspapers) as a specialist.

She speaks English, French, Spanish and Catalan and she can communicate in Russian and German.
