The Royal European Academy of Doctors-Barcelona 1914 (RAED) supports and endorses the denunciation of the National Academies of Venezuela in relation to the decrees of convening a National Constituent Assembly signed on May 1 by the president of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro. For the seven institutions that bring together the most outstanding intellectuals and researchers of the country, this movement supposes a “fraud to the democracy”.

The academies point out that, according to Article 347 of the Constitution, the convocation of this assembly corresponds “exclusively to the Venezuelan people” through a referendum and that, in the present terms, the proposal “usurps the sovereignty of the people and the fundamental rights of citizens”. In their denunciation, these institutions warn that this is a “maneuver to eliminate all the powers of the republic” whose purpose is “to establish an antidemocratic, omnipotent and exclusive state, changing for it the democratic order of our current Constitution”.

The RAED attends with its explicit support to this denunciation the call in this sense of its corresponding academician for Venezuela Francisco Kerdel-Vegas.
