Ferran Guedea, director of radiation oncology at the Catalan Institute of Oncology, highlighted the effectiveness that has been achieved in the fight against cancer thanks to the premature diagnosis of the disease and the specific treatments that are performed. Guedea made these reflections during his reception as full academician of the Royal European Academy of Doctors-Barcelona 1914 (RAED), that was celebrated the past December 29.

“Twenty years ago, when we saw a patient with prostate cancer, he had many symptoms. Today, patients come without any symptoms and have only come through a blood test. We can diagnose very early tumors that lead to a very simple treatment And that give more possibilities of cure”, explained the new academician.

Guedea also pointed out the advances in radiotherapy, his specialty: “Radiation therapy, like many treatments, evolves very quickly. The technique has greatly increased the accuracy of the treatment and now there are far fewer side effects. Less toxicity for patients, which means higher quality of life”.

The recipient read the inaugural speech “Calidad de vida de los pacientes afectos de cáncer de próstata según el tratamiento realizado” (Quality of life of patients affected by prostate cancer according to the treatment performed). On behalf of the RAED answered the full academician Albert Biete.
